1. Did you choose the writing profession or did it choose you?

It choose me.

 

2. What is your background? (education, work, etc.)

High school drop out.

 

3. When did you ‘know’ you were a writer?

When my first book, published by a traditional publisher, came out.

 

4. How would you describe your style of writing?

First person.

 

5. What is your writing process?

Take an idea to a publisher to see if there is any interest, if there is interest, sell it to the publisher with an outline, if they are still interested flesh out the outline, go to contract and only then, write the book.

 

6. What was your path to publication?

I started with a column in a weekly give-away paper, graduated to features writer and photographer for a daily with 750,000 readers, became a pubic speaker, self-published a small book comprised of my columns, took the book to a meeting of garden writers, sold a book about my main subject that was covered in the small book on two pages to Rodale Books.

 

7. What is your favourite self-marketing idea?

My favorite self-marketing idea is to book a lecture, that I am paid to give, to a group who are interested in my subject and can be whipped into a buying frenzy then sell my books to them after the lecture. Where I also book two more lectures to other groups.

 

8. What are the biggest surprises you’ve encountered as a writer?

It surprised me that a big publisher wanted to publish my book. It also continues to surprise me that my books sell so well.

 

9. How do you inspire yourself? What are your sources of creativity?

My own stories of my survival in all aspects of my life inspire me. I am a gardener and each day my own gardens inspire me. My family history inspires me.

 

10. What is your proudest writer moment?

My proudest writer’s moment is signing books for someone who has paid their hard-earned money for what I have written.

 

11. What’s the best advice you were given about writing?

Write every day.

 

12. What is your most embarrassing writer moment?

When I misspell a person’s name. Now I ask everyone to spell their name before I sign their book.

 

13. What business challenges have you faced as a writer?

Keeping track of expenses.

 

14. What is your writer life philosophy?

Only write what you know about.

 

15. When you’re not writing what do you do for fun?

Garden, boating, bird watching, entertaining friends.

 

16. Who do you like to read?

Right now I am reading a local writer who writes historical fiction about the area where I was born and have returned to, Loletta Clouse.

 

17. What’s your advice for new writers?

Be selfish with your time. Set aside uninterrupted writing time to write every day.

 

18. What are you currently working on?

My work-in-progress is a book for writers, “How To Write Your Book (essay, short story, column, family history) Now....Steps to Writing, Publishing and Marketing Your Work”.
