1. Did you choose the writing profession or did it choose you? I was writing creatively in middle school and high school, so have always enjoyed the process. Unfortunately, I also had a creative writing teacher in community college who told me I couldn’t write and since he was the teacher and supposedly knew all, I believed him. He put me off writing for at least ten years.
2. What is your background? (education, work, etc.) My background: Most of my writing comes from my work. I work with animals, pets most specifically, and write about animals.
3. When did you ‘know’ you were a writer? I knew I was a writer when my first work was published in a paying publication.
4. How would you describe your style of writing? My style is casual and conversational. It does drive some editors nuts; but most readers enjoy it.
5. What is your writing process? My writing process is straight forward. I sit at the computer and go to work. I write for six to eight hours a day.
6. What was your path to publication? My path to publication was also straight forward: I sent in queries and suggestions and quickly became published.
7. What is your favorite self-marketing idea? I like websites as a self marketing tool. www.lizpalika.com
8. What are the biggest surprises you’ve encountered as a writer? I think my biggest surprise was when I realized how little control an author has over a finished book project.
9. How do you inspire yourself? What are your sources of creativity? To inspire myself I look at my bills!
10. What is your proudest writer moment? I think my proudest moment was when my first book was published.
11. What’s the best advice you were given about writing? What’s the best advice I’ve been given? I can’t think of any. I did this the hard way, by myself.
12. What is your most embarrassing writer moment? My most embarrassing moment? A book signing when no one showed up.
13. What business challenges have you faced as a writer? Biggest business challenge? Hmmm……paying the bills during the lean times.
14. What is your writer life philosophy? What is my writer’s philosophy? Work! This may be a creative process but to be successful, one must also be self disciplined.
15. When you’re not writing what do you do for fun? For fun, I garden, play with my dogs and train the dogs.
16. Who do you like to read? Who do I read? Michael Crichton, Anne McCaffrey, Ben Bova, other science fiction, all the Harry Potter books.
17. What’s your advice for new writers? Advice? See #14.
18. What are you currently working on? I am currently working on three book contracts and three magazine articles; all due before Sept 1st!!! That’s why these answers are so short. And yes, I will meet all those deadlines. |
