Jennifer Brown Banks

1. Did you choose the writing profession or did it choose you?

I’d have to say both.  Although I believe that it was my “divine calling” to become a writer, I didn’t actually “choose it” until my mom convinced me that I had a “gift” and guilt(ed) me into it.

2. What is your background? (education, work, etc.)

I hold an A.A.S. in Business Management, a B.A. in Integrated Studies, and a teaching certificate from the state of Illinois.

In my former life, I was a banker for 14 years.  My writing career has spanned for 15 years, and over 300 articles.  I also teach writing principles at adult education centers.

3. When did you ‘know’ you were a writer?

I knew I was a writer when I received my first byline, (back in 1991), and my first paycheck (1995).

4. How would you describe your style of writing?

My writing style tends to be honest and “matter-of-fact.”  It’s also very fluid.  My goal is to help people live better lives through what I have learned, and to see beyond their limitations.

5. What is your writing process?

I typically sketch out ideas in my head, and then jot down workable ideas on paper.  I don’t write every day, but when I write, boy do I write!  I’m mentally hyperactive, so it’s not unusual for me to have multiple projects going on at the same time.

6. What was your path to publication?

My path to publication came quite unexpectedly.  I was watching the Sally Jesse Raphael show one afternoon, when I was really touched by the topic.  It inspired me to come up with and Op-Ed piece that I submitted to a local publication for singles.  The publisher called me at home, shortly after, and told me I had “serious talent as a writer.”  She instructed me to send her anything that I put on paper.  And I did.  After about 5 months, she made me a contributing writer, and the rest is history.

7. What is your favorite self-marketing idea?

I love writing articles and teaching creative principles to promote myself and my business.  Both avenues allow me to infuse my personality and my business background.

8. What are the biggest surprises you’ve encountered as a writer?

The biggest surprises?  Everything has pretty much been surprising.  It’s quite a contrast from my very regimented banking background.  I’m also surprised at how much I love living the writers’ life!

9. How do you inspire yourself? What are your sources of creativity?

I inspire myself through reading other writers and listening to music.  My sources of creativity run the gamut from music, to nature, to TV, to personal experience.

10. What is your proudest writer moment?

I’ve had a few: becoming a contributing writer for Being Single Magazine, becoming a columnist, and being published by Simon and Schuster.  I’ve also been very proud of my mom’s pride in my success.

11. What’s the best advice you were given about writing?

Best advice given to me as a writer---persevere and produce.

12. What is your most embarrassing writer moment?

I’m not sure that it’s happened yet.

13. What business challenges have you faced as a writer?

I continue to be faced with how to deal with inconsistent pay, and editors that have business Philosophies different than mine.

14. What is your writer life philosophy?

Writing is a very noble profession—take it seriously.  The privilege and responsibility is awesome.

15. When you’re not writing what do you do for fun?

I am a karaoke diva!  I also love all types of music, from Beethoven to Billy Joel.  I love eating and relaxing to a good cup of tea.  I also dig hanging out with artsy folk when I’m not writing.

16. Who do you like to read?

I like to read William July, Iyanla Vanzant, Wayne Dyer, Dr. Joyce Brothers, Barbara DeAngelis, and John Gray.

17. What’s your advice for new writers?

Start somewhere!  A journey of a thousand miles… as they say.  Don’t let rejection keep you from the craft.

18. What are you currently working on?

I am currently working on a relationship book, and a poetry book, (to be released in 2007) entitled “The Leather Pants and Other Provocative pieces.”
