1. Did you choose the writing profession or did it choose you? It chose me first, but I resisted for awhile.
2. What is your background? (education, work, etc.) I have a BA in Journalism from Penn State. Go Lions! I've done lots of jobs including bartender and I presently work part time for a local hospital.
3. When did you 'know' you were a writer? When I held my first book.
4. How would you describe your style of writing? I am a seat of the pantser. I just start at point A and go straight to point B. Editing is for the second draft.
5. What is your writing process? I have the conflict first or a what if. Then I figure out how to solve that conflict then I figure out the characters. I'm a plot-driven writer.
6. What was your path to publication? I published first with Wings Press, then Enspiren and now I have a contract with Tiger Publications. I've sold short stuff, too.
7. What is your favorite self-marketing idea? Speaking in front of people, love to do it.
8. What are the biggest surprises you've encountered as a writer? How many people think you pay to get your writing published.
9. How do you inspire yourself? What are your sources of creativity? If I don't write I can't think about anything else so I don't need too much inspiring other than noticing no housework is done.
10. What is your proudest writer moment? I think when I got my first fan letter.
11. What's the best advice you were given about writing? To keep at it. Persistence is key.
12. What is your most embarrassing writer moment? I don't embarrass easily so I can't think of anything.
13. What business challenges have you faced as a writer? Just knowing how much promotion and what kind to do. And having enough time to do it.
14. What is your writer life philosophy? Just keep writing. (Like Dory, but writing instead of swimming.)
15. When you're not writing what do you do for fun? Read and hike. Not at the same time.
16. Who do you like to read? Chris Grabenstein, Suzanne Brockman.
17. What’s your advice for new writers? Learn as much as you can about writing and about the industry.
18. What are you currently working on? A romantic comedy, but that's all I'll say. Only my critique partners know. |
